(Kampala) – Achileo Kivumbi, the head of security at the National Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters, has been released on a cash bail of 2 million shillings by the General Court Martial after a lengthy period of detention.
Kivumbi was abducted on August 1 and spent several days in incommunicado detention, where he reportedly faced torture. Following his release, Kivumbi returned home, where onlookers claimed that military insignia were planted on him by operatives. He was subsequently charged with unlawful possession of military equipment and brought before the military court.
While the NUP celebrated Kivumbi’s return, party president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, expressed concern over the broader implications of Kivumbi’s treatment. He condemned the actions of the government, stating that Kivumbi’s detention reflects ongoing lawlessness in the country. Kyagulanyi pointed out that Kivumbi has spent nearly three months in illegal detention and highlighted the plight of other political prisoners still facing similar circumstances.
In a statement on social media, Kyagulanyi called for greater awareness and action against the current regime’s practices, urging those with a sense of justice to condemn such actions and support the fight for political freedoms in Uganda. He emphasized the need for solidarity in addressing the treatment of political prisoners, asserting that every individual with a conscience should actively oppose the government’s actions.
