The Family Division of the High Court in Kampala has scheduled February 15, 2024, as the commencement date for the divorce proceedings between city businessman Drake Lubega and his estranged wife, Jalia Nagawa. High Court Judge Elizabeth Kabanda confirmed the date after verifying that all necessary documents were appropriately filed on the court record during Tuesday’s session.

During the upcoming hearing, Ms. Nagawa is seeking a court order to dissolve her marriage with Mr. Lubega, along with the disposal of matrimonial and business properties. Notably, she introduced Mr. Lubega to her parents in June 1984, adhering to Kiganda customs, and claims that they were married on August 1, 1989, following customary traditions, even though they lived together without having a child.

In her submissions, Ms. Nagawa outlines 31 prime properties owned by Mr. Lubega, advocating for the court to mandate their disposal. She alleges that the period she spent with Mr. Lubega was marked by acts of cruelty, including being denied conjugal rights, economic servitude, and instances of violence that resulted in several miscarriages.

Mr. Lubega, represented by his legal team, denies engaging in any joint business arrangements or partnerships with Ms. Nagawa during the one year they cohabitated. He asserts that she made no contributions to his businesses. Furthermore, Mr. Lubega recounts his marriage to Ms. Benita Lubega in 1994, culminating in their divorce in December 2000, after having four children together.

Ms. Nagawa, through her lawyers, accuses Mr. Lubega of not only abandoning her but also ousting her from the family business, leaving her unable to sustain herself. She contends that she dedicated her youthful years to the growth of the business alongside her husband.
