(Agago) – The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Field Court Martial of the 5th Infantry Division has sentenced 32 year old Private Ameny Bonny to death. The decision came after a two day hearing held in Ngora East Village, Paimol Sub-county, Agago District.
Private Ameny faced seven charges, including three counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, one count of abduction, and one count of absence without official leave. He pleaded guilty to all charges, acknowledging his responsibility for the crimes committed on October 20, 2024.
On that day, Ameny deserted his post at the Pakondong Detach in search of his wife, Ogom Betty, who had disappeared with UGX 16.5 million he had given her to start a business. Believing she was being unfaithful, Ameny went to Ngora East Village armed and enraged. There, he killed three people, injured two others, including a one year old child, and abducted Obita Richard at gunpoint, demanding information on his wife’s and her alleged lover’s whereabouts.
During the trial, Ameny admitted to his actions, expressing frustration over his wife’s disappearance and the failure of both her family and the police to help him. Despite his remorse, the court, chaired by Colonel Peter Musherere, delivered a death sentence, citing the severity of his crimes.
The prosecution, led by Lt. Nekemiya Waiswa, described Ameny’s acts as premeditated and devastating, arguing that he was of sound mind and fully aware of his actions. The defence, represented by Pte. Agaba Darius, appealed for leniency, highlighting Ameny’s clean military record, his role as the primary breadwinner for his family, and his cooperative behavior during the trial.
Colonel David Opeero, Deputy Commander of the 5th Infantry Division, commended the local community for their cooperation in the investigation and emphasized the UPDF’s commitment to justice and accountability. He urged soldiers to resolve personal disputes through legal and peaceful means, reaffirming the military’s stance against conflicts involving civilians.
