Uganda Cranes goalkeeper and Lamontville Golden Arrows player, Ismail Bin Abdul Rashid Watenga, initiated the new year on a positive note by inaugurating the Ismail Watenga Foundation in his hometown, Nakaloke. The foundation’s primary objective is to foster the development of young talents in the Mbale district while providing support to unemployed youth and individuals facing various challenges.
The launch, which took place on January 5, 2024, marked a significant moment for Watenga and his commitment to making a positive impact on the community. The event featured various football and netball matches, creating an atmosphere of celebration and unity. In a generous gesture, the skipper donated essential items, including sanitary pads, books, pens, pencils, balls, and uniforms to local netball teams.
Expressing his joy at the foundation’s inauguration, Watenga attributed its success to divine assistance and expressed optimism that the Ismail Watenga Foundation would become a catalyst for talent cultivation and soul upliftment in the region.
“I am excited to announce the successful launch of our foundation in Nakaloke! I am grateful to all who supported this meaningful journey. Together, we are making a positive impact on our community,” remarked Watenga.
Beyond the foundation, the 28-year-old footballer, currently on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns to the South African Premier League club Lamontville Golden Arrows Football Club, has also established the Wats Soccer Academy. This academy is dedicated to nurturing young footballers across the country, showcasing Watenga’s multifaceted commitment to sports development.
In his efforts to contribute to the growth of football in Uganda, Watenga’s Wats Soccer Academy operates parallelly with the Ismail Watenga Foundation, creating a comprehensive approach to talent identification, training, and support. The foundation’s focus on empowering unemployed youth aligns with Watenga’s vision to create opportunities for those facing socio-economic challenges in Mbale.
As the news of Ismail Watenga’s foundation launch spreads, it stands as a testament to the positive influence athletes can have on their communities. Watenga’s commitment to giving back, combined with his role as a goalkeeper for Uganda Cranes and Lamontville Golden Arrows, paints a picture of a sports figure dedicated to making a lasting impact beyond the football field.
