(Nakasongola) – The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) destroyed 36.64 tons of illicit cigarettes valued at UGX 1,684,107,271 at Luweero Industries Ltd in Nakasongola District.
The destroyed contraband included brands such as Super Match, Oris, Platinum, Business Royal, and Blue, all of which lacked proper tax stamps and health warnings. These cigarettes were smuggled into Uganda, mainly through the Southern route, over several years.
Speaking at the destruction event, Moses Kyomuhendo, Manager of Customs Enforcement for the Central Region, underscored the operation’s importance for Uganda’s economy and public health. He explained that illicit cigarettes flood the market at lower prices, undermining legitimate businesses and posing significant health risks.
