A security guard from SGA Security has been apprehended by the police in connection to the purported bank robbery at the Equity Bank branch in Soroti city.

Following an attempted break-in at the Equity Bank branch situated in Soroti District, Eastern Uganda, law enforcement authorities have apprehended two individuals suspected to be involved in the incident.

According to reports provided by the police on Tuesday, officers swiftly responded to the scene on Main Street upon receiving distress calls indicating that armed assailants had raided the bank premises earlier in the morning, subsequently taking security personnel hostage.

The two individuals currently in police custody are identified as a security guard and their supervisor, both affiliated with a private security company. Their arrests come as part of the ongoing investigation into the attempted robbery, with authorities believing that they may possess crucial information that could aid in tracking down the perpetrators.

Details revealed by detectives suggest that one of the assigned security guards failed to report for duty as scheduled, raising suspicions about potential internal collusion or negligence within the security setup of the bank.

In response to the security breach, security personnel have cordoned off most of the roads surrounding the bank premises to prevent any further unauthorized access or potential escape routes for the suspects involved in the attempted robbery.

Despite the unsettling incident, officials from Equity Bank have reassured the public that regular banking operations have resumed without disruption. In a public statement issued by the bank’s management, they acknowledged the distressing events of the morning, emphasizing that no harm was inflicted on individuals or property during the attempted intrusion. They expressed gratitude for the swift response of security agents and local authorities and extended apologies for any inconvenience caused to customers, while also thanking them for their understanding and cooperation.
