A separate report by Digital Grassroots on Child Online Safety in Uganda highlights alarming challenges faced by children online, with cyberstalking, cyberbullying, and harassment being prominent concerns. The study indicates a need for increased awareness, protection, and responsible online behavior, emphasizing the vulnerability of children, especially those of high-profile individuals, to the negative impacts of cyberbullying.
Celebrities, who often share curated aspects of their lives on social media, may unwittingly expose their children to the harsh realities of online cruelty. The actions of authorities, including parents, police, local leaders, and teachers, could unintentionally contribute to cyberbullying among children, posing potential dangers to their well-being.
One illustrative incident involved Solomon Sekayi Kyagulanyi, son of National Unity Platform (NUP) president Bobi Wine, who faced public scrutiny and cyberbullying after an incident at St Mary’s College Kisubi. Celebrity parents, like Zari Hassan, have also encountered challenges, with allegations about her son’s sexuality prompting a public response.
The Ministry of Gender, Labor, and Social Development emphasizes the importance of parents regulating their children’s online activities and guiding them to navigate the digital landscape responsibly. Child psychology experts stress the urgent need for heightened awareness, protection, and responsible online behavior, particularly for children in the limelight who face increased scrutiny and exposure on social media platforms.
