A security guard lost his life after being shot by a 47-year-old lawyer, identified as Sam Ahamya in a shocking incident following the finals of the 2023/24 rugby Nile Special Uganda Cup at the Kings Park Arena. The victim, 37-year-old Nekeon Buruga, succumbed to fatal injuries inflicted during the incident at around 10 pm.

The finals, where Heathens emerged victorious by defeating Rams with a scoreline of 57-22 in the men’s category, took a dark turn as Ahamya, armed with a pistol, reportedly retrieved his weapon at the end of the event. According to sources at Kira Divisional Police, Ahamya had initially visited the Kings Park Rugby Club for leisure with his two children earlier in the day.

The tragic incident unfolded as Ahamya attempted to perform Normal Safety Precautions (NSP) with the pistol, leading to the unintentional shooting and injuring of Buruga, who served as a watchman at the arena. The lawyer resides in Buziga, Makindye Division in Kampala District, while the deceased lived in Kireka Railways, Bweyogerere Division.

By Sunday morning, authorities had recovered the firearm used in the shooting and secured it for forensic analysis by scene of crime officers. Buruga’s body was conveyed to the City mortuary for postmortem, and investigations into the murder were ongoing.

A case of murder by shooting has been officially opened, as authorities expressed their commitment to thoroughly investigate the tragic incident. The annual police crime report for 2022 had revealed a concerning trend with 279 reported cases of murder by shooting countrywide, reflecting the rising challenge of gun violence and ownership in Uganda.
