OBONGI, Uganda –Obongi Chief Administrative Officer Andrew Leru and the Production Officer Opigo John face arrest, prosecution, and dismissal from the civil service over high-level allegations of em bezzlement of funds and a ghost project.
The Acting IGG Dr. Patricia Achan Okiria has directed the CAO Obongi Andrew Leru and the Production officer Opigo John to account for the money allegedly embezzled from the two tractors given to Obongi district by the government or face arrest, prosecution, and dismissal from the civil service. Dr. Achan Okiria gave the duo only one week to account for the money.
The Acting IGG was responding to protests from members of the community who accused Andrew Leru and Opigo John of embezzling over 300 million shillings generated by the two tractors which have been destroyed due to poor management and corruption.
During a baraza held at the Obongi district council hall, on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, the wananchi complained that they paid money to plow their land, but the money was embezzled, and their land has not been plowed up to date.
Earlier during a live talk show on a local Radio station called AULOGO FM in Obongi town council, callers accused the CAO Leru Andrew and Production Officer Opigo John of corruption and embezzlement of money generated from the two district tractors.
They told the IGG that Leru and Opigo had stubbornly refused to account for the embezzled money as directed by the Obongi district council. They told the IGG that the leaders in Obongi have been using the tractors on their farms and hiring the tractors to rich people and institutions, yet they are meant for the wanainchi.
In reaction, the Acting IGG Patricia warned the two civil servants about their rampant corruption tendencies which will not be tolerated. She narrated that the rampant corruption in Obongi must be dealt with immediately. Things are not adding up for CAO Leru as a section of the Wanahinci is making a countdown beginning yesterday Wednesday, of the two weeks given to them to account for the Money.
In regards to this, Leru and Production Officer Obigo are now almost in trouble as some of the Wanahinci want even H.E Yoweri Museveni to intervene in the matter and ban CAO Leru Andrew from holding any government office. They believe he should be imprisoned if found guilty instead of transferring him to any other district in Uganda
