(Buloba) – A bus reportedly overloaded and speeding from Mubende to Kampala was intercepted by police following a public alert on social media. The incident involved a Link Bus, registered as UBH 703H, which was flagged for carrying excess passengers and speeding dangerously, raising concerns for road safety.
Ahabyona Derrick, a concerned citizen, alerted Uganda Police via a post on social media, calling attention to the bus’s excessive speed and overload. Derrick’s post, tagged to relevant officials and agencies, requested immediate action to prevent a potential road hazard.
In response, police spokesperson SP Michael Kananura confirmed that officers intercepted the bus at a checkpoint in Buloba, just outside Kampala. Statements were taken from both the driver and the conductor as part of the investigation into the reported traffic violations. SP Kananura acknowledged Derrick’s role in reporting the issue, emphasizing that public vigilance is essential in supporting road safety efforts.
A minor issue emerged when it was noted that there had been a discrepancy in the license plate details shared by Derrick, with the bus registration noted as UBH 703H instead of UBH 703F. However, SP Kananura clarified that despite this error, the bus was correctly identified and detained for the offenses reported.
Police and community members have praised the swift intervention, underscoring the importance of community policing and collective vigilance. Many on social media appreciated the timely response and emphasized the need for drivers to prioritize safety, particularly in the lead-up to the busy holiday season.
Lydia Joyce Akol, another user, suggested increasing the number of police checkpoints to improve road safety as the Christmas season approaches. Another commenter noted a history of buses exceeding passenger limits along the Mubende-Kampala route, describing instances where passengers had to stand for extended distances due to overcrowding.
