Police in Bushenyi District are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a student at Kampala International University (KIU) western campus. The student, identified as Opirin Boniface, was found deceased on Sunday evening in a bathroom at Cell D, Ishaka Division in Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality.

According to Mr. Marcial Tumusiime, the spokesperson for greater Bushenyi Police, the deceased was a first-year engineering student at KIU. The discovery was made around 12:30 PM when another student, who shared the same hostel as Opirin, went to empty dirty water in the bathroom and found him hanging.

Upon this discovery, the student promptly alerted others in the vicinity, including the hostel manager, who then reported the incident to Ishaka police station. Ms. Jolly Kamukama, a local businesswoman, described the deceased as one of the most disciplined students she had encountered, expressing confusion over the circumstances leading to his suicide.

Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the deceased had two packets of rat poison in his bag, alongside the hanging. Mr. Tumusiime noted that apart from the rope mark around the neck, there were no other visible external injuries on the body.

The body was subsequently transported to Kampala International University Teaching Hospital in Ishaka for postmortem examination as the investigation into the incident continues.
