The Territorial Police in Greater Bushenyi and Buhweju CPS are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding an attack on Honorable Mwijukye Francis, Member of Parliament for Buhweju Constituency. The incident occurred on May 12, 2024, at 3:30 pm at Nyakishana Sub-county.
The Honorable MP had responded to a complaint from churchgoers at Rwanyamabare Catholic Church and members of the Rwamabare Farmers Association. They claimed that their church was under threat of removal or demolition by Kamugisha Frank, a neighbor with whom they are in dispute over the church land. Upon arrival at the scene, the MP encountered a rival group armed with sticks. A violent confrontation ensued, during which the MP sustained serious head injuries. He was promptly taken to Nsiika Health Centre 4 by the police for medical treatment.
It is important for the public to understand that legislators serve as representatives of their constituents and bear the responsibility of Parliament. Therefore, any acts of violence or threats against legislators are an assault on the core principles of democracy. Such acts of impunity against our elected representatives will not be tolerated.
The Uganda Police Force is actively investigating this matter and is committed to ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
