(Kenya) – Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei is fighting for her life after sustaining severe burns in a house fire in Trans Nzoia County, Kenya. The athlete, who recently made her marathon debut at the Paris 2024 Olympics, was rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret with critical injuries covering 75% of her body.
Cheptegei had initially been taken to Kitale Level Four Hospital before being transferred to MTRH for specialized care. Her father, Joseph Cheptegei, confirmed her dire condition, expressing deep concern for her survival.
The fire, which also left her boyfriend Dickson Ndiema Marangach with serious burns, has prompted police to investigate arson as a possible cause. Both Cheptegei and Marangach are currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.
Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah Ole Kosiom confirmed the incident, noting that the investigation is ongoing. Cheptegei, who owns a home in Cheminy, Kween District, Uganda, had built another house in Trans Nzoia where she was staying during her training.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Ugandan sports community, with many praying for her recovery as authorities work to determine the cause of the fire.
