The District Police in Kaberamaido have apprehended the Sub-county LCIII chairperson, Francis Ecolu, and his wife, Sarah Abito, on charges of theft involving roofing nails designated for construction works at Kaberamaido General Hospital.

The Kaberamaido District Police Commander (DPC), David Otabong, revealed that the stolen roofing nails, valued at Shs1.9 million, were district hospital property. The accused now face charges of theft of government property, and the police have confirmed that the suspects, residing in the village of Agweng, Kamuk Parish in Kaberamaido Sub-county, were taken into custody on Thursday.

Otabong disclosed that the arrest was made after confirming that Ecolu and Abito were in possession of the stolen roofing nails, which they reportedly sold for an unspecified amount of money.

“We have registered a case of theft against them for stealing 6 bags of nails from Kaberamaido General Hospital,” stated the DPC.

Providing further context, Otabong explained that the contractor, operating under the brand name BASHAM ASSOCIATES COMPANY LIMITED, had been renting a room at the suspects’ home in Agweng A Village. However, instead of maintaining the agreement, the couple allegedly resorted to stealing the roofing nails.

The accused, Francis Ecolu and Sarah Abito, are scheduled to appear in court at an appropriate time, as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft of the hospital’s construction materials.
