(Kampala) – A break-in at the Kyolina Kyekikweyimilira Limited offices, located on Mbogo Road in Kiwatule parish, Nakawa Division, resulted in the theft of over UGX 50 million in cash and several valuable electronic items, including laptops and mobile phones. The theft occurred during the night of Sunday, October 20, 2024, and has since sparked an ongoing investigation by Kampala Metropolitan Police.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire revealed on Monday, October 21, that a total of UGX 51,702,450 in cash, 45 laptops, and 50 mobile phones were stolen from the company premises. These items, many of which were clients’ belongings used as collateral for loans, were taken in what police are describing as a well coordinated crime.
According to Owoyesigyire, the case was reported to the police by Hellen Nakayima, a 45 year old loans officer at the company. Nakayima stated that unknown individuals broke into the office by cutting through the building’s iron sheets and wooden ceiling. The internal padlock on the front door was also cut, providing the burglars with access to the company’s safes and equipment.
The incident occurred during the late hours of Sunday, and the company’s security guard reported unusual circumstances on the night of the break-in. The guard claimed that a visitor offered him a drink that made him feel unwell. He fell asleep shortly after consuming the beverage and awoke to find that the office had been ransacked.
The stolen property includes:
Item Description | Quantity | Estimated Value (UGX) |
---|---|---|
Cash | – | 51,702,450 |
Laptops | 45 | N/A |
Mobile phones | 50 | N/A |
Owoyesigyire stated that a case of shop breaking and theft has been officially opened, and the police are pursuing all available leads. Officers from both Kiwatule Police and Kira Road Police Division visited the scene on Monday to gather evidence and continue their investigation.
“Initial investigations suggest that the burglars dismantled the company’s safe, disabled the security cameras, and deactivated other systems before proceeding with the theft. This appears to be a well organized crime,” Owoyesigyire explained.
Police are calling on anyone with information about the break in to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation. Authorities have assured the public that every effort is being made to identify and apprehend the culprits.
The company is working with the police to assess the full extent of the damages and determine the next steps as the investigation continues.
