Police in Kanungu district are currently investigating the tragic death of 77-year-old Teopista Tibabuza, a resident of Group Farm Cell in Kibiimbiri Parish, Kihihi Sub-County.

According to Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, the lifeless body of the deceased was discovered in her bed by Pastor Tumugabe Gerald during a fellowship visit.

The incident occurred on November 20, 2023, around midday at Group Farm B Cell when Pastor Tumugabe arrived at Teopista’s home for prayer and found it locked after calling without any response. He inquired with a neighbor, Peace, wife of Ndagije, who mentioned not having seen Teopista. The pastor, noticing a small opening at the back door that Teopista used, discovered her lifeless body upon entering.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that she had recently sold a garden of maize, though the amount remained unspecified.

Maate added that John Mugisha, the son-in-law, reported the matter to the police. The body was found lying on the left side at the edge of the bed, displaying a swollen eye with bruises and fresh scratch marks indicating strangulation on the neck.

The scene of the crime was visited, a postmortem was conducted on-site, and the body was subsequently handed over to relatives for a dignified burial. Investigations have been initiated, inquiries are ongoing, and a case has been registered at Kihihi Police station under reference number CRB 403/2023.
