Kasese, Uganda – A police officer in Kasese District, Rodgers Kapili, died on the afternoon of June 8 after a massive eucalyptus tree, weakened by a severe rainstorm, crashed into the Mpondwe Police Station depot.
Kapili, who was stationed at Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council, was the elder brother of Jockim Masereka, widely known as DJ Masjoe of a local radio station in Kasese.
The storm, which caused extensive damage across several parts of western Uganda, uprooted numerous trees and disrupted daily life. Authorities believe strong winds loosened the roots of the aging tree, leading to its collapse directly onto the police building.
Local leaders reported that the eucalyptus tree, planted in 1935, had grown substantially over the decades, and its compromised root system likely contributed to the tragic incident.
Mr. Mapoze, a colleague, mourned Kapili, praising him as a dedicated and disciplined officer who positively impacted the community. “He was one of the bravest young officers we had. His discipline, his humility, and his commitment to serving the people stood out,” Mr. Mapoze stated. “We are heartbroken, and I extend my deepest condolences to his family and colleagues.”
The Uganda Police Force has described the incident as a tragic outcome of the severe weather and stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the accident.
As of press time, an official statement from the Uganda Police Force regarding Kapili’s death had not yet been released.
