Lira District CDO, Abongo Judith, has initiated legal action against the management of Mama Supermarket, located in Lira City, after they allegedly assaulted her.

Three staff members of Mama Supermarket in Lira City face criminal charges for assaulting and undressing a disabled woman.

The incident has led to the arrest of Rose, a supermarket employee, along with two colleagues, including a security guard, to answer charges of assault against Abongo Judith.

On Tuesday morning, the DPC of Lira CPS ordered both parties to record statements.

The alleged torture and humiliation at Mama Supermarket in Lira City have drawn significant attention, with many demanding justice for Judith Abonyo (50 years old), the Community Development Officer (CDO) of Agali Sub-County.

Speaking to the media from her home in Lira City West, Abongo narrated the shocking incident, which occurred on Sunday, January 19, 2025.

She explained that she was shopping at the supermarket around 3:00 PM when the cashier denied receiving her 50,000 shilling note, claiming she had only paid 32,000 shillings.

Local Leaders Speak Out

Hon. Aduku Caro Gloria, the councilor representing the people of Omito Ward and Odokomit, threatened to organize a demonstration next week to denounce the mistreatment of the innocent disabled woman by the management of Mama Supermarket. She demanded that the supermarket management be legally compelled to pay 800 million shillings for the torture and humiliation of the CDO.

Abongo earlier told the media that she was taken to the manager’s office, where she was humiliated, beaten with a pair of shoes, and undressed in a dark corridor.

“I paid for my items, but when I asked for the balance, the cashier refused and accused me of not paying. I was taken to a back room where they began torturing me. A girl called Rose and an Askari from Mama Supermarket took pictures and videos of the whole situation.

They even stripped me of my clothes, including my underwear, claiming that the items I had bought were theirs,” she cried.

The DPC of Lira City CPS has called for calm while investigations into the matter continue.

ARCC Lira City, represented by Boney Alele Ferdinand Okello, condemned the brutal act of assault and called for a thorough investigation.

Judith has hired a team of nine lawyers, including representatives from NUDIPU, Human Rights Defenders, FIDA Uganda, and others, to pursue legal action and ensure justice prevails.
