Tragedy struck Chahafi Town Council today when a 63-year-old man, identified as Charles Kabango, took his own life during the burial proceedings of his daughter-in-law.
Charles Kabango, a resident of Karuzogero Cell, South Ward, reportedly ended his life shortly after showing mourners the location for digging the grave of Flavia Nyirambonigaba, his daughter-in-law, who was being laid to rest yesterday 27th January 2025.
According to Janan Kabibi, the Local Council One chairperson of Karuzogero Cell, Charles guided residents early in the morning to prepare the burial site for Flavia. However, by midday, as the burial service commenced, he retreated to his house and consumed a pesticide known as “Rocket.”
Mourners became alarmed when they noticed the distinct smell of the pesticide emanating from his house. Upon entering, they found Charles vomiting. He was rushed to Mutorele Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival.
By press time, Charles Kabango’s body had been returned to his home for burial arrangements. Efforts to get a comment from the Kisoro Central Police Station were unsuccessful.
