Man Found Dead After Burial in Rukungiri; Police Investigate

Rukungiri District, Uganda – Police in Rukungiri have launched an investigation into the mysterious death of Denis Muhwezi, 38, whose body was discovered early Monday morning, May 19, 2025, in a pool of blood.

According to authorities, Muhwezi had attended a burial ceremony in Nyabushenyi Village, Nyarushanje Sub-county, on Sunday, May 18, 2025, with family members. His younger brother, Tumuramye John, last saw him at Minera Hot Springs around 5:00 PM that day, leaving him there an hour later.




Tragically, at approximately 6:34 AM on Monday, May 19, 2025, a resident named Arinaitwe Ambrose discovered Muhwezi’s lifeless body along Rubanga–Minera road in Omukatojo Cell, Rubanga Parish, Buyanja Sub-county, while escorting children to school.




Ambrose immediately informed Muhwezi’s relatives, who then reported the incident to the Rukungiri Central Police Station.




Police visited and documented the crime scene, and statements were recorded from key witnesses. Muhwezi’s body has been moved to Rwakabengo Health Centre III mortuary for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

One suspect, Turyatunga Victor, is currently in police custody to assist with the ongoing investigation.

ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident, assuring the public that inquiries are underway to uncover the truth behind Muhwezi’s tragic death.
