The territorial police in Amolatar District have received with sadness a report of suicide by hanging involving Opolot Thomas. The incident is believed to have occurred between the 10th and 11th of April 2025, at an unknown time, in Nakituba “A” Village, Muntu Parish, Muntu Sub-County, Amolatar District.
According to the North Kyoga Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, it was alleged that on April 10, 2025, Opolot Thomas, 42, was last seen drinking at Muntu Township Centre. While at the drinking place, he reportedly kept telling people that he was going to commit suicide, complaining that people always laughed at him for failing to get a wife.
Records indicate that he had previously been in relationships with two different women but had separated from both.
Later that evening, around 7:00 p.m., when Opolot returned home, he continued making suicidal statements. His brother, Olobo, followed him home and found him still drinking and in possession of a rope. Olobo took the rope from him and informed their father, but the family did not take the matter seriously.
Tragically, on the morning of April 11, 2025, at around 6:00 a.m., Opolot was found hanging from a mango tree located approximately 8 meters from his house.
The police were informed, and a case of suicide was registered at Muntu Police Station. The crime scene was visited and thoroughly documented by the Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO). A piece of cloth suspected to have been used by the deceased was recovered at the scene, and the rope that had earlier been taken from him was also retrieved from the father and has been kept as evidence.
The body has been handed over to the relatives upon request, and statements from family members have been recorded.
“This is truly unfortunate,” said SP Okema. “We have received several suicide reports recently. We appeal to anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts to seek support and speak to their loved ones or professionals before taking such drastic steps.
