Residents gathered at the home of Alifari Obaga in Nakawano Village, Kizuba Sub-county, Namutumba District, as detectives from Namutumba Police Station retrieved the body of his deceased wife, Margret Nayobe, on December 18, 2023.
According to Mr. Patrick Mulumba, the area defence secretary, there were longstanding suspicions of Obaga planning harm to his wife due to allegations of adultery spanning the past two years.
A police manhunt is currently in progress in Namutumba District, eastern Uganda, for 30-year-old Alifari Obaga. He is accused of killing his 28-year-old wife, Margret Nayobe, at their residence in Nakawano Village over her alleged receipt of Shs2,000 from a suspected lover.
Ms. Esuka Logose, a neighbor, reported that Obaga confronted Nayobe about the money, claiming it was borrowed from a man to purchase a cooking pot. A dispute between the couple occurred on Sunday afternoon, leading Nayobe to express her intention to leave. Despite reconciliation attempts, tragedy struck later that night.
Ms. Logose stated that around 10:30 pm, Obaga, fueled by suspicions of his wife’s relationship, returned home and fatally harmed her, unbeknownst to the neighbors who had advised him to wait until morning to address the issue.
Mr. Patrick Mulumba reiterated that Obaga had harbored intentions to harm his wife for two years due to allegations of adultery, and sadly, these intentions have materialized.
Mr. Isa Gulere, the youth councilor representing Nawansagwa Parish, revealed that Obaga had no legitimate employment and was financially dependent on the deceased.
Ms. Jane Namukuve, Namutumba Police Community Liaison Officer (CLO), condemned the act as an instance of domestic violence and emphasized the need for men to uphold their responsibilities. She confirmed that the police are actively seeking Obaga to charge him with murder.
