Mbarara City Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Dorcus Komuhangi, a Primary Five pupil at Rwemiiko Primary School, who was found deceased in her bedroom on Wednesday evening.
According to reports, Komuhangi had lived with her relative, Milton Otafiire, for a decade after losing her parents at the age of four, was last seen that morning preparing for school.
Her sudden death has prompted a police inquiry to determine whether it was a case of foul play or suicide.
Authorities have transported the body for a post-mortem examination as investigations continue.
This incident follows other recent student deaths, raising concerns about youth mental health. In February 2024, a Senior Three student at Seeta High School’s main campus, 16-year-old Eli Shama Ssesanga, was found deceased in a dormitory in the early hours of Friday morning. He was discovered hanging from a mosquito net by fellow students who had woken up for early morning revisions at approximately 3 am.
Startled by the discovery, the students alerted teachers, who in turn informed the police. Officers from Mukono Police Station arrived at the scene at approximately 4 am.
Information about the incident remains limited, as the school management has reportedly withheld details from the public. Details surrounding the student’s death remain scarce.
In 2024, Budaka District Police investigated the circumstances under which Kolovina Naisiga, a 20-year-old Senior Six student at Budini Secondary School in Kaliro District, died. Naisiga reportedly died by suicide by hanging, and her body, which was found in her room at their home in Bukomolo village, Kadatuni Parish, Katira Sub-County, Budaka District, was taken to Mbale City Mortuary for post-mortem examination.
