On October 12, 2023, a 31-year-old man lost his life in a violent altercation, allegedly fueled by Parish Development Model (PDM) funds. The Mitooma District Police are now on the hunt for the suspect responsible for this tragedy.
Martial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson, confirmed that the incident took place at Omukijungu trading centre, specifically in Kanyabwanga parish, Kanyabwanga sub-county, within Mitooma District. The alleged assailant, identified as Muhereza Gallas, resides in the same area and is currently a fugitive.
The sequence of events leading to this unfortunate incident began on the evening of October 11, 2023, around 19:30. The victim, Tumuhereze Nicholas, visited a local bar owned by Emmanuel at Omukijungu trading centre. Inside the establishment, he encountered Muhereza and several others enjoying alcoholic beverages.
Allegedly, Muhereza boasted to the victim about receiving PDM money, suggesting that he could assault Tumuhereze and compensate him for his suffering using funds distributed by the government to enhance household incomes. This boastful statement led to a violent confrontation.
Reportedly, Muhereza initiated the physical assault, striking Tumuhereze with punches and kicks throughout his body. The bar owner, Emmanuel, intervened to rescue Tumuhereze from further harm.
Upon receiving a report of the assault, the local authorities at Kashongorero Police Post were notified, and Tumuhereze received initial medical treatment at RAYAAN Medical Clinic in Kashongorero trading centre. However, due to the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently transferred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for more comprehensive care.
Tragically, on October 28, 2023, around 11 pm, Tumuhereze Nicholas succumbed to the injuries sustained during the altercation. The cause of his death is pending investigation as authorities await the results of a postmortem examination at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
