(Masaka) – A woman at the center of a viral video showing her feeding a baby with urine and faeces has been charged with aggravated torture and remanded to Masaka Central Prison. Stella Namawejje, a 34 year old mother of six from Kyazanga in Lwengo district, was arrested on Sunday, following a joint operation by the police and local leaders.
Namawejje was presented before the Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court at around 3:00 PM on November 5, 2024, where she faced the charges. The disturbing video, which gained widespread attention, depicted Namawejje in the act of feeding a baby with her own bodily waste. The case has sparked outrage across social media and led to calls for strict action.
Court staff were reportedly eager to catch a glimpse of Namawejje when she arrived at the court’s detention room. Many fellow suspects detained in the court also sought an explanation for her actions. Despite the gravity of the charges, Namawejje remained calm throughout the proceedings. No relatives or legal representatives appeared on her behalf during the court session.
The chief magistrate ordered that Namawejje be remanded to Masaka Central Prison until November 7, 2024. After the session, she quickly boarded the prison bus, avoiding the media and fleeing from journalists who were eager for statements.
The joint police operation that led to Namawejje’s arrest was initiated after the video of the incident went viral, triggering widespread public condemnation. Namawejje’s actions have been deemed highly disturbing, and the case has raised questions about child abuse and protection in the region.
