(Kira) – Police Deny Shooting Bobi Wine, Cite Accident in Injury Incident

The Uganda Police Force has issued a statement regarding an injury sustained by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP). The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Kiira Bulindo, Wakiso District, as Kyagulanyi was leaving a Thanksgiving ceremony organized by NUP lawyer George Musisi.

According to the police, Kyagulanyi was injured when he stumbled while attempting to get into his vehicle. This account contrasts with claims made by Kyagulanyi’s team, who allege that he was shot during a scuffle with security forces. The police have emphasized that an investigation will be conducted to clarify the facts surrounding the incident.

The police report states that Kyagulanyi and his team had initiated a procession upon leaving the ceremony, despite police guidance against such an action. The procession reportedly led to the closure of the road, prompting police intervention. During the resulting confrontation, Kyagulanyi is said to have sustained injuries.

After the incident, Kyagulanyi was taken to Najaeem Medical Centre in Bulindo for first aid before being transferred to St. Francis Hospital, Nsambya, where he is currently undergoing medical examination and treatment. The police have not yet disclosed any further details regarding the nature of the investigation or when the findings will be released.

The incident is the latest in a series of confrontations between the NUP leader and law enforcement, highlighting the ongoing tension between opposition figures and the government. Kyagulanyi’s injury has sparked various reactions, most sympathetic with his supporters expressing concern over the use of force by security personnel, while dismissing the official government position.
