MBARARA CITY – Police in Mbarara City have arrested a 27-year-old man accused of deliberately knocking down a senior police officer who was on duty along the presidential campaign route.
According to Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson SP Samson Kasasira, the suspect, identified as Agumaniiwe Richard from Katojo Cell in Mbarara City South Division, was apprehended on 1st December 2025 following an incident captured in a viral video circulating on social media.
Kasasira explained that the incident happened at around 4:00 pm at Kikona, Ruti Town, along the Mbarara–Kabale Road. Police officers, led by SP Ocaya Kennedy, the OC Station of Ruti, were clearing the road to allow the presidential convoy to pass. President Yoweri Museveni had just concluded his campaign activities in Rwampara District and was heading to Mbarara City for his final rally of the day.
“The suspect riding motorcycle registration number UAC 177Z (Yamaha) was signaled to leave the road, but he continued approaching at high speed and knocked the officer intentionally,” Kasasira said.
SP Ocaya sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby health facility for first aid. Police say he is currently in stable condition.
Kasasira added that upon arrest, the rider appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. “He seemed drunk and was subjected to a breathalyzer test to establish the alcohol content in his body to assist with investigations,” he noted.
Police have confirmed that investigations into the case of attempted murder are ongoing.
