Police in Rukungiri District have launched investigations into the attempted murder of Angello Twinomuhangi, an independent candidate for the Rukungiri District LC V chairperson seat.
Twinomuhangi was found on the night of January 6, 2026, tied up and unconscious at Minera Bridge in Nyarushanje Sub-county. According to police, the incident happened at around 9:00 p.m.
Residents in the area reportedly discovered him lying by the roadside and raised an alarm, prompting local leaders to alert the police. He was later rushed to a nearby health facility for medical attention. His current condition has not yet been officially disclosed.
Preliminary police findings indicate that Twinomuhangi had a handkerchief tied across his mouth, while his hands were bound behind his back with what is suspected to be a USB cable. Officers say this suggests he may have been attacked elsewhere and later dumped at the bridge.
Rukungiri District Police Commander said investigations are ongoing to establish the motive behind the attack and identify those responsible. Police are also examining whether the incident could be linked to the ongoing political activities in the district ahead of the local government elections.
Authorities have appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing any information that could help in the investigations.
