The North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, has stated that the territorial police and District Security Committee of Alebtong District have temporarily closed Aloi Secondary School and apprehended seven students identified as ringleaders to assist with investigations into a student strike that occurred on November 20, 2024, at Aloi Secondary School in Aloi Town Council, Alebtong District.

A report was filed at Aloi Police Station by Mr. Agang Alfred, a 48-year-old deputy headteacher.

On the evening of November 20, 2024, after dinner, some students began complaining about insufficient food portions, leading to a noisy protest and the throwing of stones. The situation escalated into a full-blown strike, resulting in damage to window glass and light bulbs.

A police case file was registered at Aloi Police Station, and the District Security Committee, led by the Deputy RDC and DPC, visited the crime scene.

The student body and teaching staff were addressed, and the students present were registered.

Preliminary investigations suggest that, in addition to food complaints, some students are opposed to sitting for end-of-year exams and have shown disrespect to the new headteacher. This is the third student strike at the school this year.

The current headteacher assumed office on November 19, 2024. There is a possibility that some teachers and board members may be opposed to the new headteacher and may be inciting the students.

On November 21, 2024, a security meeting was held at the school, and the following students were arrested:

  1. Okii Joshua (S2)
  2. Obote Apollo Milton (S2)
  3. Omedi Abel (S2)
  4. Ilem Kizito (S1)
  5. Ogwang Kennedy (S2)
  6. Okeng Raphael (S1)
  7. Ogwal Brian (S2)

All seven students have been detained at Alebtong Central Police Station as investigations continue.
