(Mutukula) – The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) enforcement team recently intercepted of a Sinotruck carrying a substantial load of contraband textiles. This operation took place on the morning of October 28, 2024, around 4:00 am, as the truck traveled along the Mutukula-Masaka road with its lights off, raising suspicions among the team on alert.
Upon closer examination, the registration plate of the truck, identified as UBQ020Z, confirmed it was the vehicle of interest, prompting a chase. The enforcement team had previously observed a new smuggling tactic in the area where smugglers utilized Sinotrucks to transport goods from the Tanzanian side of the border into Uganda, disguising them as sand.
To tackle this issue effectively, URA deployed confidential informants on the Tanzanian side of the border to gather intelligence. The successful recovery of the contraband textiles is a direct result of this strategic effort.
Upon verification, the operation uncovered 1,060 pieces of assorted fabric materials, each measuring 25 yards by 58 inches. This seizure not only underscores the determination of URA’s enforcement team but also illustrates the challenges posed by smuggling activities in the region.
The Sinotruck involved in this case now faces potential forfeiture to the state, as stipulated under the customs laws applicable in the region.
