Six members of the Pentecost Assemblies of God Church were arrested on Monday, September 14, 2024, for sabotaging government programs aimed at reducing poverty in Tubur sub-county, Dakabela County, Soroti District.

According to Soroti District Deputy RDC Bakak Ronald, the arrested members include Ebwolu Moses (church pastor), Omolo Simon, Lookout Abraham, Anyaiti Julius, Abuko Sarah, and Apoloti Jenifer.

Additionally, four more members of the Church of Christ from Katine sub-county in Soroti District—Edweru Joseph, Nyero Aidah, Eyima David, and Ebwolu Patrick—are under investigation for the same issue of sabotaging government programs.

Speaking to our reporter after a joint operation with Soroti District Central Police Station, Bakak expressed concern about how a church could openly oppose government programs and projects such as immunization, PDM Emyooga, and others.

He stated that the NRM government’s actions are constitutional and that any church that opposes government programs is acting illegally and will not be tolerated in Soroti District.

Bakak Ronald revealed that the RDC’s office in Soroti District has discovered that various churches and religious groups within the district are strongly resisting government programs like immunization, PDM Emyooga, and PDM.

He mentioned that during the recently concluded polio vaccination program, two churches were found to be mobilizing their members and the community not to participate.

The former Kabale District Deputy RDC also stated that a certain family in Soroti District informed them that participating in the PDM Program is not allowed and is against biblical scriptures.

He vowed not to tolerate such churches in Soroti that are promoting poverty among their members and the community, contrary to the NRM Manifesto of creating a middle-income generating country.
