Police in Kanungu are searching for Erias Nahabwe, suspected of murdering his 75-year-old father, Bagambana Nyansio, on February 4, 2025. The gruesome killing took place at the family’s home in Kanjara Cell, Southern Ward, Kanungu Town Council.

Preliminary reports suggest the motive was a dispute over money and land documents. Nyansio, feeling unwell, had asked his son for money to seek medical treatment at Katate Health Center IV.

When Nahabwe refused, Nyansio demanded his land documents, intending to sell part of the land to cover his medical expenses. This request escalated into a heated argument. Nyansio left for the health center around 11:30 AM, while his wife went to a nearby bar.

Upon returning home around 7:00 PM, Nyansio’s wife discovered his body. His head had been severed, and a bloodstained panga, believed to be the murder weapon, lay nearby.

Area chairperson Twesigye Koronerio alerted the police, who dispatched a team, including a canine unit, to the scene.

While the police dog tracked Nahabwe to his residence, he remains at large. Authorities have also noted the suspicious disappearance of the deceased’s herdsman.

Nyansio’s body was taken to Katate Health Center IV for a postmortem examination. ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that police are actively pursuing the suspects.
