The Police Canine Unit has recently extended its operations to cover six additional districts in the country, as disclosed by Police spokesperson Fred Enanga in July. The districts now included in the expansion are Mitooma, Bulisa, Mayuge, Kalungu, Luuka, and Kiruhura.
The information was conveyed via X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday, December 30. The K9 unit’s reach has also been broadened to encompass eight more districts: Karenga, Moroto, Nabilatuk, Kumi, Buliisa, Luuka, Bukedea, Katakwi, Kaabong, and Napak.
Enanga shared statistics, stating that Police dogs successfully resolved a total of 6,843 cases between January and May 2023. Among those detained during this period were 5,686 men, 717 women, and 440 juveniles. Additionally, 2,463 suspects were presented in court, with a total of 2,883 exhibits recovered.
The Police Canine Unit operates as a specialized force collaborating with various departments to prevent, detect, and investigate crime. Their responsibilities include assisting in the search and detection of explosives, narcotics, and drugs. The unit also engages in tracking suspects, crowd control, guarding, and patrol duties.
Furthermore, the unit plays a vital role in supporting the anti-narcotics department. It provides narcotics detection dogs at Entebbe International Airport and other border points, along with explosive detection dogs for the Directorate of Counter-Terrorism.
