Police in Moroto district have recovered a gun belonging to the UPDF from a Karamojong warrior in Nadunget Town Council.
The gun was recovered on Friday around 9:00 PM after police were alerted by the chairperson of Nachuka village, who spotted a suspected warrior carrying a weapon in the village.
John Angella, the LC1 chairperson of Nachuka village, noticed Locur Sagal, a warrior, sneaking into the village with a gun. Angella promptly notified the Nadunget Police post, and police responded swiftly. However, the suspect dropped the gun and fled the scene.
Michael Longole, the Mt. Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident, stating that the gun has been recovered and efforts are underway to apprehend the suspect.
Longole mentioned that the suspect disappeared upon seeing security officers approaching from a distance. He added that the recovered gun will be submitted to ballistic experts to determine if it was used in any criminal activities, including recent murders.
He praised the vigilance of Nachuka village’s chairperson for reporting criminal activity and urged other community leaders to follow suit to enhance overall peace and security.
To date, 1165 guns and 8848 rounds of ammunition have been recovered from Karamojong warriors since the Usalama Kwa Yote disarmament operations began in July 2021.
