A Ugandan soldier, Private Richard Echom, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for attempted murder after shooting his girlfriend multiple times during a quarrel in 2022.
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Third Division Court Martial handed down the sentence on Tuesday, finding Echom guilty of attempting to kill his girlfriend, Daphne Atim, in what prosecutors described as a deliberate act of violence.
The incident occurred during a domestic argument that escalated dramatically. Echom used his service weapon to fire several shots at Atim, leaving her severely injured. Miraculously, she survived but remains hospitalized due to the extensive injuries she sustained.

Witness testimonies from Atim’s sister and her doctor played a crucial role in the trial, painting a vivid picture of the attack and its aftermath. The prosecution presented compelling evidence of Echom’s intent to kill, leading to his conviction.
During the hearing, Echom broke down in tears as the guilty verdict and sentence were announced.
Court Martial Chairman Colonel Francis Katereho emphasized the importance of the ruling, calling it a clear warning to soldiers who abuse their power to harm civilians.
“This ruling should send a strong message to all soldiers who misuse their authority and violate the rights of civilians. Such actions will not be tolerated within the UPDF,” Col. Katereho stated.
Atim, who remains hospitalized, welcomed the sentence, describing it as a step toward justice and accountability. Speaking from her hospital bed, she said, “I am happy that justice has been served. This sends a message that no one is above the law.”
She also acknowledged her long road to recovery, expressing gratitude for surviving the ordeal. “It has been a tough journey, but I’m grateful to be alive to see this day,” she added.
