A Ugandan soldier, Private Richard Echom, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for attempted murder after shooting his girlfriend multiple times during a quarrel in 2022.
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Third Division Court Martial handed down the sentence on Tuesday, finding Echom guilty of attempting to kill his girlfriend, Daphne Atim, in what prosecutors described as a deliberate act of violence.
The incident occurred during a domestic argument that escalated dramatically. Echom used his service weapon to fire several shots at Atim, leaving her severely injured. Miraculously, she survived but remains hospitalized due to the extensive injuries she sustained.
