Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje, the Mufti of Uganda, has called on Muslims nationwide to ignore what he termed as ‘noise’ from individuals he described as saboteurs. Mubajje asserted that these individuals were allegedly dismissed from the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) due to disciplinary issues.
Addressing the concerns, Mufti Mubajje assured the Muslim community that everything is in order, emphasizing that they do not engage in conflicts with those making noise, as many of them were previously associated with UMSC but were expelled.
These statements were made after the commissioning of Masjid Aziz Hakim in Masabasi Cell, Mutufu Town Council, Sironko District. The event saw the attendance of numerous Muslims, religious leaders, and government officials, including Members of Parliament from the area.
Islam’s inception in the region dates back to 1903, with the first mosque constructed in 1977. Sironko District currently hosts over 300 Muslims.
Mufti Mubajje attributed the criticism to jealousy over the achievements under his leadership, including the establishment of permanent mosques, Muslim schools, and health centers nationwide. He dismissed claims that his opponents’ noise, particularly concerning property sales, aims to tarnish his reputation.
Despite facing opposition since his election as Mufti in 2000, Mubajje remains steadfast in his commitment to peaceful coexistence and development. Political and religious leaders, including Ms. Florence Nambozo, the Woman MP for Sironko District, rallied support for Mufti Mubajje, acknowledging his role as a promoter of harmony.
In response to the newly upgraded mosque, local resident Mr. Ismail Mafabi expressed optimism that it would contribute to attracting new converts to Islam. Dr. Sarah Wasagali Kanaabi, the board chairperson of the Electricity Regulatory Authority, urged UMSC to consider establishing a Muslim-founded school in the district.
