The Muslim World League (MWL) office in Uganda has made a major contribution to the lives of more than 1,000 orphans, urban refugees, widows, and other needy individuals within Kampala city. The donation, which included rice, maize flour, beans, cooking oil, and clothes, was distributed at the MWL offices in Kampala on Thursday, August 22, 2024.

Mohamad Gabriel, the country director of the MWL, said that the initiative was driven by a sense of altruism. “This is an ongoing project for the non-registered orphans, despondent refugees, and needy people in Kampala who are not receiving anything in the bank, and it is part of our mission,” Gabriel stated. He also mentioned that 1,900 registered orphans and refugees would receive monetary support through their bank accounts, with payments currently underway.

The event was presided over by Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa, the deputy mufti of Uganda, who expressed his gratitude to the MWL for its continuous humanitarian support worldwide. He also took the opportunity to commend President Yoweri Museveni for creating a conducive environment for such charitable activities and for welcoming refugees from across the African continent.

Waiswa highlighted Uganda’s unique approach to integrating refugees into the community, noting that refugees in Uganda are able to live and interact freely with locals, contributing to the nation’s diversity. He urged Ugandans to remember the country’s past struggles with civil unrest and to appreciate the peace and assistance now available. Waiswa also stressed the importance of using such aid responsibly to maintain peace and security.

Reflecting on recent tragedies, such as the Kiteezi garbage collapse that claimed over 35 lives, Waiswa underscored the importance of supporting the vulnerable in society. He encouraged those with means to assist others in need, as unforeseen disasters can strike at any time. The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) plans to organize a special Juma prayer for the victims of the Kiteezi tragedy.

In a similar act of charity, the MWL recently donated food items to over 100 elderly people in Luweero district. Kampala Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Aminah Lukanga praised the MWL’s efforts, stating that while the government is doing its part, such support is crucial in supplementing government efforts to assist the needy.

One of the beneficiaries, Aminah Zaid, expressed her gratitude for the aid she received, acknowledging the difficulties she has faced in feeding her family.
