A group of about 800 foot pilgrims from the Diocese of Lira began their journey to Namugongo in Kampala early on Saturday. They are making this trek ahead of the Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations on June 3.
The pilgrims set off at around 1 a.m., starting their long and arduous journey with great excitement and high spirits. The group includes people of all ages, from the elderly to the very young, all united in their faith and determination.
As they started their walk, many of the pilgrims wore rosaries around their necks and sang songs and prayed together. This helped keep their spirits high as they faced the challenges of their journey. The pilgrims carried their belongings on their backs and brought small jerrycans with them, prepared for the road ahead.
The first stop for the Lira pilgrims will be in Loro, located in Oyam district. Here, they will rest for the night and recharge for the next leg of their journey. After Loro, they will continue their walk to Dima in Kiryandongo district, where they will spend another night before proceeding further.
This journey is a significant act of faith for the pilgrims, and despite the physical demands, their commitment to reaching Namugongo for the Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations remains strong.
