Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has addressed criticism from some Ugandans who questioned his involvement in promoting music battle concerts in Kampala. He expressed surprise at the notion that holding a critical government position should require individuals to devoid themselves of personal interests and empathy.
Speaking on Tuesday, September 26, Tayebwa defended his support for the music industry, highlighting its economic significance. He cited data from the Uganda Performance Rights Society, projecting that the industry would employ over 500,000 people by 2030, with revenues of sh280 billion. Currently, it contributes sh140 billion to the country’s economy and boosts tourism through global stars like Eddy Kenzo and Ghetto Kids.
Tayebwa, also the Ruhinda North County MP, emphasized the need for support, including legal reforms and economic interventions, for the music sector. He argued that music has healing qualities and provides solace during challenging times.
Tayebwa recently stirred a debate on social media when he suggested organizing a music battle concert between legendary musicians Jose Chameleone and Bebe Cool. While some of his followers supported the idea, others expressed reservations.
This proposal followed Tayebwa’s promotion and attendance at the music battle concert featuring Sheebah Karungi and Cinderella Sanyu, held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala nine days prior.
