Sarah Aguti of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) celebrated victory as she emerged triumphant in the Dokolo Woman MP byelection on Thursday (March 21), clinching 23,044 votes. Her win paves the way for her to assume the parliamentary seat vacated by the late Cecilia Atim Ogwal.
Ogwal, a seasoned politician, passed away on January 18, leaving the seat vacant and prompting the need for the byelection.
In a field of six candidates, Janet Rose Elau Okello Adongo of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) secured the second position with 14,001 votes.
Rosemary Ogwal Alwoc, Ogwal’s daughter representing the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), clinched the third spot with 8,168 votes.
Esther-Obot Akullo, an independent candidate, followed in fourth place with 790 votes, while Harriet Ageno of the National Unity Platform (NUP) garnered 727 votes. Independent candidate Rebecca Arao trailed in sixth with 439 votes.
Erikwaine Ngobi, the Dokolo electoral district returning officer, officially declared Aguti the winner at 10:42 pm at the Dokolo district local government council hall.
The total number of valid votes cast for candidates stood at 47,169, with 988 rejected as invalid ballot papers. In total, 48,157 ballot papers were counted, with 49 being spoilt ballot papers.
