One historical theory suggests that the Bakiga are descendants of Bamasaba people who fled Bugisu due to fear of circumcision. This theory is supported by shared names like Bushika and Bukigai, which are found in both Kigezi and Bugisu.

The Umukuka III of the Bamasaba people, His Highness Jude Mike Mudoma, encouraged the Bakiga to practice circumcision for cultural and health reasons.

The Umukuka III recently concluded his official tour of the Kigezi region. He was invited by the Mutebile family and the clergy of the Kabale Catholic Church. His entourage included several ministers and envoys from the Inzu Yamasaba, including Hon. Andrew Masaba, Hon. Vincent Woboya, and Hon. Wadada.

While in Kigezi, the Umukuka participated in a fundraising drive for the Rushoroza Catholic Church, which was initiated by the late Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Professor Emmanuel Mutebile. Over 20 million shillings were raised during the event.

His Royal Highness highlighted the close cultural ties between the Bakiga and Bamasaba people. He noted similarities in names of places, customs, and even physical appearance.

Commissioner of Police Dr. Rubanza, who hails from Kabale, and Regional Police Commander Elgon Mr. Otim Bosco also acknowledged the strong cultural connections between the two groups.

The Umukuka was warmly welcomed by the Mutebile family and the church. Inzu Yamasaba spokesperson Mr. Steven Masiga emphasized the unique bond between the Bakiga and Bamasaba people, suggesting that the fear of circumcision might have led to the Bakiga’s migration from Masabaland.

The Umukuka and his entourage enjoyed a sumptuous party at Lake Bunyonyi Beach, among other activities during their visit.

In his speech to the Banyakigezi, the Umukuka urged cultural institutions across Uganda to work closely with the government to achieve developmental goals. He also encouraged the Banyakigezi to visit Masabaland and strengthen cultural ties.

The Umukuka officially extended an invitation to the Banyakigezi people, especially those in government, to visit Masabaland.
