Democratic Party (DP) President Nobert Mao has requested DP Members of Parliament to allow him until February 27, 2024, to decide whether to step down from his position, amid mounting pressure from MPs.

The decision follows two extensive meetings between Mao and the DP parliamentary caucus, during which members urged the Justice Minister to resign from his leadership role within the DP and focus on his ministerial duties within the NRM government.

President Museveni, in a recent letter to DP President General Norbert Mao, expressed optimism regarding the cooperation between the Opposition and the NRM, highlighting its potential to foster unity among Ugandans. Mao, who assumed the role of Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister upon signing the agreement, hosted a rally in his home district of Gulu, emphasizing the importance of dialogue among political actors.

However, the agreement has not been without controversy. A faction within the DP voiced opposition, alleging that party organs were not consulted and denouncing the agreement as a personal affair between Mao and President Museveni. Despite internal dissent, DP Secretary General Gerald Siranda stood by Mao, citing benefits derived from cooperation with the NRM, such as support for his bid for a seat at the East African parliament.
