The sports fraternity gathered in large numbers at Christ the King Church for the requiem mass honoring the memory of the late sports doctor, James Mary Sekajugo. Dr. Ssekajugo was discovered dead at his Bugolobi residence on Friday.
Captain Emmanuel Wamala of the Uganda Golf Club, where the late doctor was a member, revealed that Ssekajugo may have slipped and passed away in his house over ten days ago. The discovery of a foul odor from his residence prompted neighbors to inquire about his well-being, leading to the tragic revelation.
During the mass, Ambrose Tashobya, Chairman of the National Council of Sports (NCS), praised the late doctor for his multi-faceted contributions, serving not only in sports medicine but also as an administrator and athlete in various sports federations.
“We have lost three sports personalities in a space of 10 days, which is very sad for sports,” remarked FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo, conveying condolences from former CAF official Ashford Mamelodi and the CAF medical committee. Magogo highlighted Dr. Sekajugo’s role in ensuring the safety and health of athletes.
Dr. Donald Rukare, President of the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC), read condolence messages from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), where the late doctor served as the chairman of the CAF anti-doping Committee and vice president of the world anti-doping committee.
Athletes from badminton, golf, and football, along with friends, relatives, and other well-wishers, attended the mass led by Fr. Pius Male Sentumbwe.
