Gulu, Uganda: As part of heightened security measures during the festive season, Gulu District witnessed a unique event: two reformed street gang leaders, Onek Patrick and Nyero Silver Patrick, joined Cosmas Okidi, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) on radio Speak FM on Monday, December 18th, 2023.

The former “speakers” of the Ojwero-wiye youth group and security voice of the youth, respectively, used the platform to advocate for continued government support for reformed street gangs and ghetto youth. They appealed to the DRDC’s office to forward their request to the President’s office.

In response, DRDC Cosmas Okidi made a heartfelt plea to all street gangs and ghetto youth, particularly those still resorting to violence and crime, to embrace a different path. He urged them to join their peers in participating in numerous government programs available in Gulu District.

“We’re now working with these reformed youth leaders to convince their colleagues to seek government support,” Okidi stated. He expressed gratitude to Lt. Gen. Otema Awany for already providing five motorcycles to the youths and for promising further assistance.

The RDC’s office is actively organizing meetings with ghetto youth to educate them about the dangers of drugs and alcohol addiction to their health. Okidi emphasized the need for a mindset shift, encouraging youth to focus on income-generating activities like the Parish Development Model (PDM), the emyooga program, and vocational education opportunities, including the Presidential Skilling Initiative.

“We need to change our minds and focus on activities that will bring us income,” Okidi concluded, addressing the media. “There are many opportunities available, and the government is here to support you.
