“Eat the Money, But Vote Wisely”: Mbarara Woman MP on Campaign Season Discipline

The Ankole Times

Mbarara District Woman Member of Parliament, Margaret Ayebale Rwebyambu, has called on voters to educate themselves on the constitutional roles of Women Representatives in Parliament. She warned against electing candidates who make unrealistic promises that fall outside their legislative mandate.

Rwebyambu emphasized that Women MPs, under Uganda’s affirmative action policy, are primarily tasked with advocacy in areas such as health, education, and women’s empowerment—not infrastructure or public service delivery.

“When you see an aspiring Woman MP promising electricity, roads, or piped water, it means they don’t fully understand their role,” she said. “We need to educate voters that these responsibilities lie with constituency MPs, not Women Representatives.”

Currently serving her first term and a member of Parliament’s Health Committee, Rwebyambu also voiced concern over the persistent exchange of money between candidates and voters during elections.

She acknowledged the practice as difficult to eradicate but urged voters to remain discerning.

“I know we may not stop money from changing hands,” she said. “But take it with wisdom—don’t let it blind you from voting for the right candidate who will actually represent your interests.”

As the 2026 general elections approach, Rwebyambu is actively mobilising support to retain her seat. She faces stiff competition from Loyda Muhimbura, the district councillor representing Rubaya Subcounty. Political activity is already intensifying across Mbarara District.

Rwebyambu underscored the need for civic education and voter discipline, especially among women and youth, to ensure that elected leaders are well-informed, accountable, and truly responsive to the needs of their communities.
