Ishaka, Bushenyi — Kampala International University (KIU) successfully held its 31st graduation ceremony, conferring degrees on 2,214 graduates in a twin celebration that also marked the university’s Silver Jubilee (25 years of existence).
The colorful event, held at the university’s Western Campus in Ishaka, Bushenyi District, was attended by thousands of guests from across Uganda and abroad.
Graduates traveled from various regions to take part in what many described as one of the most unforgettable days of their academic journey. Accompanied by their parents, sponsors, and guardians, the joy on their faces was evident throughout the ceremony.
One of the most inspiring moments of the day was the graduation of 75-year-old widow, Irumba Betty, who earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration. She set a university record as the oldest graduate at the Master’s level, symbolizing the lifelong pursuit of education.
Leadership Remarks and Vision for the Future
In his address, Vice Chancellor Prof. Muhammad Ngoma emphasized the university’s commitment to nurturing a generation that excels intellectually and upholds the values of integrity, creativity, and critical inquiry.
“Our students are ready to join the labor market. Through our dynamic learning environment, we have prepared them to meet the needs and challenges of today’s world,” said Prof. Ngoma.
The graduation was held under the theme: “Competence-Based Education for Sustainable Development.”
Of the 2,214 graduates, 1,300 (61%) are male and 914 (39%) are female. A total of 1,237 students graduated from science-based disciplines, while 977 completed programs in the humanities.
Notably, 69 students graduated with First Class Honours, including 42 females and 27 males, drawn from both science and humanities disciplines.
Al Hajj Hassan Basajjabalaba, Founder and Chairman of the KIU Board of Trustees, credited the university’s staff-student grant model, which has enabled both lecturers and students to secure various research grants. He pledged continued support to expand this initiative.
Basajjabalaba, who founded the university in 2001, has overseen its growth into a multi-campus institution. Today, KIU operates its Main Campus in Kansanga, Kampala, the Western Campus in Bushenyi, and a constituent college in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
International Presence and Guest of Honor Remarks
The event was graced by Ambassador John Shama Shaga, Head of Mission at the Nigerian High Commission in Uganda, who served as Guest of Honor. In his speech, he encouraged graduates to apply the knowledge, skills, and values acquired during their studies to navigate the increasingly complex and competitive global landscape.

“The world outside these gates is demanding, but with the education you’ve received, you are more than prepared to face it,” he stated.
Under its founding leadership, the university continues to position itself as a center for academic excellence and innovation in the region.
