On January 5th, 2024, Makerere University had the honor of hosting the delegates of the 27th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC). The event, which took place from 3rd to 6th January 2024, provided a platform for Makerere to exhibit its commitment to cutting-edge research, innovation, and academic excellence. The delegation, led by Bugabula South Member of Parliament Hon. Maurice Kibalya, included esteemed representatives from the Commonwealth.
Upon their arrival, the delegates were warmly received at the Yusuf Lule Central Teaching Facility Auditorium by Makerere University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, and members of the university’s management team. In his welcome address, Prof. Nawangwe emphasized Makerere’s role as a premier higher education institution in the region, focusing on research that addresses crucial issues such as climate change, food security, and emerging diseases.
Highlighting the university’s dedication to research, Prof. Nawangwe mentioned the existence of 36 research centers, including notable centers of excellence such as the Africa Regional Centre of Excellence for Crop Improvement (MaRCCI) and the Africa Centre of Excellence in Material Product Development and Nanotechnology (MAPRONANO). The Vice Chancellor assured the delegates that Makerere, with dedicated funding from the government, is modernizing its research infrastructure to meet the challenges of the next century.
The Head of Delegation, Hon. Maurice Kibalya, expressed gratitude to the university leadership for their prompt preparations to host the delegation. He apologized for the absence of the Speakers and Presiding Officers, who were visiting Quality Chemicals Limited on the same day. However, he conveyed the Parliament of Uganda’s commitment to hosting future events at Makerere University, including the Pan-African Parliament in May 2024 and the African Parliamentary Union in 2024.
Following the welcoming remarks, the delegates embarked on a tour of Makerere’s Innovation Hub and explored projects funded by the Makerere University Research and Innovations Fund (Mak-RIF). These projects showcased a diverse range of innovations, addressing critical issues in various fields. Noteworthy projects included the development of solar-powered energy-saving smart electric cook stoves, digital games for teenage reproductive and mental health education, and a low-cost medical ventilator.
The exhibition also featured projects focusing on agriculture, bioenergy, artificial intelligence in healthcare, e-mobility, waste management, and technological solutions for smallholder farmers. The showcased projects reflected Makerere University’s commitment to practical solutions that contribute to societal well-being and development.
The visit by the 27th CSPOC delegates provided an opportunity for Makerere University to demonstrate its dedication to research, innovation, and community impact on a global platform.
