One of the most reputable universities in Uganda, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), is at risk of being shut down due to its failure to comply with essential operating standards. Officials from the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council (UMDPC) and the Uganda National Council for Higher Education (UNCHE) have noted that the university’s infrastructure is inadequate.

Ayubu Twaaha, the vice chairman of the UMDPC, previously expressed his concerns regarding the quality of the university’s facilities during an inspection.

He emphasized that this was the fifth evaluation visit and that no meaningful improvements had taken place.

The absence of necessary biomedical science laboratories was identified as a significant concern impacting medical education at the university.

As a key medical training institution in Uganda, it is essential for MUST to comply with the required standards. If the university does not resolve these issues, it may face repercussions that could disrupt student learning.

Officials are now being urged to address these problems before further measures are implemented. Established in 1989, Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) is a well-regarded public university in Uganda. It has built a reputation as a foremost institution for quality education in science and technology.

With over 8,000 students enrolled, it ranks among the top 5,000 universities globally, positioned at 4,490.

Thus, its closure would be disastrous not only for Uganda but also for the entire region, as it accommodates students from various parts of the world, particularly the interlacustrine region.

The public has also expressed concern, urging the government to reduce unnecessary expenditures and provide support for the university.
