The European Union (EU) has launched a significant initiative aimed at supporting graduate education in African universities through its Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme. Specifically, the “Partnership to Strengthen Graduate Training and Research Capacity for Developing Climate Smart Agrifood Systems in Central and East Africa (CSAS)” project has been established with funding from the EU. This project, coordinated by the University of Dschang, involves collaboration with six African Partner Institutions and one EU Technical Partner. Its primary objective is to enhance the training of professionals in developing climate-smart agrifood systems in Central and East Africa.

The CSAS project is designed to provide comprehensive training in various aspects of climate-smart agrifood systems, encompassing disciplines such as agriculture, environmental science, climate science, and socio-economic aspects of food systems. It aims to equip both students and staff with the necessary knowledge and skills to address the challenges posed by climate change in the agricultural sector.

Over the duration of the project, which spans from 2024 to 2028, a total of 26 Masters and 8 PhDs will undergo training in thematic areas including Climate Smart Agriculture, Agriculture and Rural Innovations, Dryland Agriculture, Livestock Production Systems, Plant Breeding and Seed Systems, Food Security, Geomatics, and Artificial Intelligence. The project offers scholarships for full degree programs as well as short-term credit-seeking mobility opportunities for students. Additionally, it will support the mobility of 8 staff and 8 trainees across the partner Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

This call for scholarship applications specifically targets 4 PhD and 8 MSc programs to be hosted across the partner HEIs. Eligible candidates must be African residents at the time of application and must apply to study in institutions located in Cameroon, Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, or the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s important to note that applicants are only permitted to apply to study in an institution outside of their home country. Furthermore, the initiative strongly encourages female and vulnerable candidates to apply, and all applications will be treated with confidentiality.

The deadline for the submission of applications is set for the 14th of June 2024. Detailed information regarding the application process can be found on the University news portal.
