In a recent event at ISBAT University in Kampala, Dr. Jane Egau Okou, the undersecretary for Finance and Administration at the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES), encouraged Ugandans to consider Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes in the modern age of technology.

Dr. Okou emphasized that PhD programmes represent the highest level of academic achievement and should not be limited to older individuals. She stated, “A PhD is not just a title but a commitment to pushing the boundaries of human knowledge.” She believes that these new PhD programmes in information and communications technology and business and management studies will produce visionary researchers and innovative leaders who will contribute to technological advancements.

Dr. Egau also highlighted the potential of PhDs in the business world, saying, “A PhD in business and management studies will equip scholars with tools, knowledge, and research skills needed to address challenges in the evolving global economy and lead organizations towards sustainable growth and success.”

Pradeep Kumar, the Director of Academic Affairs at ISBAT University, emphasized the importance of multidisciplinary approaches in today’s fast-changing world and how pursuing a PhD allows students to develop new knowledge through systematic and scientific research.

Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) Managing Director Winston David Agaba, a special guest at the event, encouraged positioning Uganda as a hub of knowledge in Africa through continuous education. He highlighted the practicality of doctorates in addressing the challenges facing Africa.

To apply for a PhD programme in Uganda, candidates should have a relevant master’s degree or its equivalent from a recognized higher education institution, according to the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). On average, a PhD program in Uganda lasts three to five years.
